Public Education
Public Education - teaching the recreational boating public, is one of the cornerstones of the Auxiliary's value
to the Coast Guard and the Nation. Our complete curriculum contains courses in Basic Boating, Boating Safety,
Seamanship, Navigation, Radio and Electronics, Sailing and other topics, ranging from one or a few hours to several
class sessions.
Flotilla 2-4 is very active in Public Education - come join us for a class! If you don't see a topic listed at the
right that you may be interested in, ask us about it - chances are we have such a course, and just haven't listed it yet
in this online catalog. Our courses are generally great values for the education received.
Increasing your knowledge is not only fun in and of itself - who wouldn't want to know more about the exciting pastime
you've taken up? You, your family and friends will enjoy yourselves more out on the water with the more you know.
Special courses, topics or class sessions might be set up for groups or at special locations upon request. Ask our Public Education
Officer for assistance.

About Boating Safely
This course offers basic boating skills, such as knowing your boat, boat
handling, trailering, how to avoid problems on the water and more.
In 8 classroom hours we cover 7 chapters followed by a test.
This course provides a flexible and exciting presentation!
About Boating Safely covers material that goes beyond the basic NASBLA
(National Association of State Boating Law Administrators) requirements and provides
the student with a comprehensive foundation on which to start a boating pastime or
update their boating knowledge.
The course uses state-of-the-art graphics and technology and appeals to all age groups.
ABS is also taught to fulfill the New Jersey Boating Safety Certificate requirements - all
boat operators in NJ waters are now required to posses and carry the certificate of completion.
More details on this course are found on the About Boating Safely website.
Flotilla 2-4 offers this course with a $5.00 discount coupon on a Vessel Exam (performed by F2-4 personnel).
|
Flotilla 2-4 is presenting this course in two half-day sessions, Saturdays 04/24/2010 and 05/01/2010.

GPS For Mariners
GPS for Mariners is a modern learning experience that focuses on the GPS equipment typically owned by
the recreational boater. This course is the result of an exciting synergy between textbook's publisher,
the book's author, and the Auxiliary.
The presentation of the course involves inviting course participants who already own hand-held GPS units
to bring them to the class, increasing interactivity of the educational experience and getting students more involved.
However, this class is so effective that even those not possessing handheld units will learn how to use
a GPS for practical recreational boating.
The course is composed of four hands-on lessons (in one approximately 6 hour day) that cover the history
of the GPS, how it works, your receiver, GPS selection, course plotting and using GPS to navigate.

Flotilla 2-4 will be offering GPS for Mariners later this year. See our events calendar for details.
